Program Structure
Duration
Most apprenticeships run 3-4 years, depending on your trade specialty.
Classroom Hours
144+ hours of classroom instruction per year covering theory, safety, and technical skills.
On-the-Job Training
2,000+ hours of paid, supervised work experience annually with IUPAT contractors.
Curriculum
Comprehensive training in safety (OSHA), tools and equipment, surface preparation, application techniques, blueprint reading, estimating, and more.

- Must be at least 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license (preferred)
- Physically able to perform the work
- Pass drug screening

Do I need any prior experience to become an apprentice?
No. Our apprenticeship programs are designed for individuals with no prior experience in the trades. We provide all the training you need.
How much does the apprenticeship program cost?
Nothing. All training is provided free of charge to apprentices. You'll earn competitive wages while you learn.
What's the difference between an apprentice and a journey worker?
Apprentices are in training (typically 3-4 years) and work under the supervision of journey workers. Journey workers have completed their apprenticeship and hold state certification.
Can I take courses if I'm not currently working?
Course eligibility varies. Contact the Training Department to discuss your specific situation and available options.
Are classes held during the day or evening?
Class schedules vary by course and time of year. Most apprentice classes are held in the evening. Journey worker courses may be offered during the day or evening depending on demand.
Do you offer training in Spanish?
